Quarantine Reading

Today we’re recommending something for the adults to fully immerse themselves in. A story told by Tintswalo Christian Nkuna, a formidable strong woman who is the founder of Wise Maidens Network, an organisation that supports and empowers single mothers. Find below the synopsis:

They say there is no love as real as the first love. But if the first love slaps the hardest, the first heartbreak cut the deepest. Just as teenage love makes you think nobody can love you better, the first hurt makes you think nobody can ever love you. What follows are feelings of bitterness, worthlessness and self-pity. Add a child into the fray and what you have is a messy totality of co-parenting with the person who crushed you.

It is an account of a young woman’s high school crush that turned into paradise, before following many a relationship’s fate of lies, broken vows, separation, and starting over again.

With a writing style that makes you feel like you are her neighbor, Tintswalo invites you to introspect, blush, yawn, yell and breakdown with her as she revisits some of love’s greatest misfortunes. If you accept the call to join her, all she asks of you is that you do not judge her, but to have an open mind and a compassionate heart.

In times of Covid-19…..

So during this time of uncertainty and public panic we’ve been requested to socially distance ourselves. However, that gives us all the more reason to spend quality time with loved ones, finish that book you’ve been putting down for later, re-connect with our children and explore the people they’re becoming. It’s a time to show compassion to those most vulnerable to the virus and those less fortunate than ourselves.

So over the next couple of weeks, we will be recommending amazing books you can engross yourself in, and as usual we’ll start with the little ones…….

The first book we recommend was released by African Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o last year called: Sulwe. It’s a beautiful tale that inspires children to see their own unique beauty. It’s also a conversation starter for colourism which has been so topical amongst us women of colour and these are conversations that need to be had.

Heritage

As Heritage Month is coming to an end, I’d like to share this amazing children’s book that celebrates being an African. It’s so important for our children to get representation in a world that’s constantly becoming more and more westernised. My husband and I are still working on teaching our daughter each of our mother tongue languages, that is: kiSwahili and isiXhosa because it’s something we’re so proud of and want to pass on to the next generation. There’s nothing more beautiful than watching a young free-spirited child being truly comfortable in their own skin and embracing everything about themselves. It will surely raise a grounded adult that won’t need validation from the outside world, don’t you think?

‘I love me!’ can be found on an online bookstore called ethnikids www.ethnikids.co.za they have a wide variety of books available in most official South African languages. I would recommend this to all parents

Who am I?

I am a child of the soil
Who's smile glistens
With the rays of the bright African sun
I am a woman
Not defined nor limited by titles of
Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister or friend
Walking to the inner beats of rhythmic drums
With a natural away of my child-bearing hips

Who am I?
I am the them who sacrificed for the now
I am she who paves the way forward
I am their who will continue the legacy
I am strong within my weakness
I am beautiful within my imperfections
I am here, in each moment; living

Who am I?
I am a kaleidoscope of love, kindness, humbleness and joy
I am a vision of He that strengthens me
This is me.
